Beyond Ribbon Cutting: Sustainable O&M for circuit riders in rural Africa

One way to build sustainability, as several correspondents noted, is to do projects only when local people want them and will organize to help build and maintain them. That’s why it’s good to be wary of prescribing solution from afar ─ whether you are a fan of bicycles, or birth control ─ as some readers clearly are. You may think it’s the solution. But if the villagers don’t think so, your project isn’t going to last. Only projects that villagers appreciate, and take ownership for, will be kept in working order and safe from looting.
